Firefighter injured, cats killed in Algonquin house fire

A firefighter suffered a minor injury and two cats died in a house fire early Sunday morning in Algonquin.

Firefighters from the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District were dispatched at 5:15 a.m. to reports of a structure fire at 1312 Merrill Ave. in Algonquin. The first crews to arrive about two minutes later found a single-story home with smoke showing. Fire crews brought the fire under control within minutes, according to the fire district. The fire was declared out at 6:05 a.m. and firefighters remained on the scene until 8:30 a.m., the fire district reported.

The house was occupied at the time of the fire, and all of the occupants escaped without injury, according to the fire district. Two cats died, but other pets escaped.

There was no further information available about the injured firefighter or an estimate of damage to the home. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the fire district reported.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District received assistance from the Huntley Fire Protection District, Carpentersville Fire Department, Crystal Lake Fire Department, and Fox River Grove Fire Protection District.
