Not much cleared up on injury front for Bears

Friday's abbreviated afternoon practice before the Bears boarded a mid-afternoon flight to the West Coast did little to clarify the injury situation at wide receiver.

It was however, conformed that center Roberto Garza and left guard Matt Slauson will miss the 49ers game Sunday night with the ankle injuries that sidelined them in the first half in Week 1.

Neither of the O-linemen practiced nor did wide receivers Brandon Marshall (ankle) or Josh Morgan (groin). Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery got in some limited practice time but did not run at anywhere close to full speed during the time that media are allowed to watch practice.

“I felt pretty good out there,” Jeffery said, “but practice and a game are different.”

Jeffery and Marshall were both listed as questionable, which means there's a 50-50 chance they will play. Morgan, who suffered a setback after a limited practice Thursday, was listed as doubtful (25 percent chance of playing).

Because Marshall finished the game last week, even though he limped noticeably at times, and because he's missed just five games in his previous eight NFL seasons, he is expected to play. He was also healthy enough to fly to New York on Tuesday to fulfill his weekly duties on the Showtime series “Inside the NFL.”

Although Marshall didn't practice, he participated in the walk-through and was able to jog.

“We'll see where we are (Saturday) as we get our walk-through in San Jose,” said coach Marc Trestman, who added that Marshall and Jeffery could both be decisions made shortly before the 7:30 p.m. (Chicago time) kickoff.

“We've got up to 90 minutes before the game to make those decisions,” Trestman said. “We're going to use every minute of it to make sure we make the right decision in the best interests of the team and certainly for the player.”

Santonio Holmes is the only healthy wide receiver currently on the 53-man roster, and he's still playing catch-up to master the playbook after signing Aug. 16.

“He's worked very hard at it,” Trestman said. “He's been very diligent spending time before practice, after practice, in walk-throughs with (wide receivers coach) Mike Groh and offensive quality control coach) Carson (Walch) in terms of learning what he needs to in his assignments. He's doing everything he can to get himself ready.”
