Group to visit St. Charles, help first responders prepare wills

As the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks nears, a group that utilizes volunteer attorneys to help first responders draw up their wills is still working hard.

The Wills For Heroes Foundation, a nonprofit group formed after the Sept. 11 attacks, has helped prepare more than 7,000 estate plans for first responders.

On Friday, they expect to add up to 70 more to that tally at an event beginning at 10 a.m. at 2 E. Main St., St. Charles.

All the one-hour appointment slots are filled, and organizers need more volunteer attorneys, preferably those who specialize in estate planning.

"It's important to take care of the people who take care of us," said Brian K. Jones, a 1996 Geneva High School graduate and Chicago attorney who brought Wills for Heroes to the Geneva Fire/Police Department in late 2012.

Attorneys interested in volunteering should call (312) 606-2698.

"If a few attorney volunteers want to come, that would be very helpful. You can never have too many hands. After the Geneva event, everyone was very thankful and appreciative," Jones said. "It's something they put off for 15, 20 years. They were able to knock wills out in the course of an hour,"

Friday will mark the second Wills For Heroes Foundation event in Kane County. Jones is open to a third if there is enough interest.

First responders who are interested also can call (312) 606-2698 and Jones could provide referrals for upcoming events in Chicago and Downers Grove.
