Illinois police investigate fatal hit-and-run

GRANITE CITY, Ill. - Illinois State Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that left a bicyclist dead in Granite City.

Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. said Wednesday the police have identified a person of interest in the Aug. 28 crash that killed 54-year-old cyclist Richard Thomas. Authorities say he died of his injuries in a St. Louis hospital the next day.

Dye says a car was driving behind Thomas when its front passenger side hit him around 11 p.m. He says Thomas was knocked off the bike and struck the car's windshield before landing in the road.

Dye says the motorist didn't stop and there were no witnesses. Authorities found the bike and the grill of the 1998 Buick.

Authorities say Thomas didn't have reflectors on his clothes or lights on his bike.
