Road named for Illinois soldier killed in Afghanistan

MOKENA - Part of a road southwest of Chicago has been named after a soldier killed in Afghanistan earlier this year.

WLS-TV reports residents gathered in Mokena Saturday for a ceremony re-naming a portion of Townline Road "Aaron Toppen Memorial Drive."

The road leads to the Toppen family home.

The 19-year-old Army private first class was one of five American service members killed in a June friendly fire incident by a U.S. airstrike called in to help defend against a Taliban ambush.

Frankfort Township supervisor says the naming ceremony is "a small token of appreciation" to Toppen and other fallen service members who "have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe."
