West Chicago barn fire sparked by lightning

A West Chicago man was able to extinguish most of a minor barn fire likely sparked by lightning Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The owner also freed a horse from his 1.5-story barn on Prince Crossing Road, West Chicago Fire Deputy Chief Hugh Stott said.

Investigators believe lightning struck the roof, igniting a small fire that caused "very minimal" damage, Stott said. The owner used a fire extinguisher to put out most of the blaze before firefighters arrived about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

No injuries were reported.
