First suburban Walmart Neighborhood Market opens in Des Plaines

The first Walmart Neighborhood Market in the suburbs is officially open for business.

The 24/7 grocery store opened Wednesday at 727 W. Golf Road, located within the Des Plaines Market Place shopping center. The 39,000-square-foot store - about a fifth of the size of a typical Walmart Supercenter - includes a bakery, deli, liquor department and pharmacy.

While the store may be the first Neighborhood Market in the suburbs, it's part of the national retail giant's plans to open some 270 to 300 similar stores nationwide this year, and another 400 next year.
