Sex assault charge leads to officer's firing

GRANT PARK, Ill. - A police lieutenant in the Kankakee County community of Grant Park has been fired after being charged with criminal sexual assault.

Stephen Nardi of Steger was arrested by Illinois State Police on Tuesday and appeared in Will County circuit court on Wednesday, where a judge ordered him held in lieu of $250,000 bond.

The judge also ordered Nardi not to have contact with the victim and to surrender all weapons.

Grant Park Police Chief Carl Frey said the 45-year-old Nardi was on unpaid administrative leave during a yearlong criminal investigation. In a statement, Frey said Nardi's conduct did not involve the village of Grant Park and was unrelated to his police duties.

It wasn't immediately known if Nardi has obtained legal representation.
