Main break leaves downtown Elgin residents without water

Residents in downtown Elgin went without water for several hours Sunday after a water main broke, the city's fire department reported.

Officials said that at 4:30 a.m., large amounts of water were reported pouring onto State Street from Chicago Street, an area that has been undergoing sewer repairs and road work.

Residents of high rises at 104 S. State Street, 120 S. State Street and 222 Locust St. did not have water for several hours while the problem was addressed by the water department, officials said.

The fire department reported that the water department was able to restore water to residents at 9:30 a.m.
