'Best ... worst of times' applies today as well

Charles Dickens said, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." And in my humble opinion, we could say the same thing today. What do we celebrate? Robin Williams and Philip Seymour Hoffman, both considered great actors and great people, each died by their own hands. Hollywood stars openly sleep with whomever seems to be available, and any marriage lasting over six months is considered a success. We celebrate an athlete, not for a great performance but rather for having the courage to "come out publicly" and proudly tell the world that he is a practicing homosexual. Legal gay marriage is celebrated as a greater accomplishment than a 50-year marriage.
