This photo of a lone mushroom was taken by 4 year old Garrett Krodel on a recent trip to Cleveland, OH. During a picnic at the zoo, he snapped this shot with my regular camera. The simple details of the mushroom contrast the lines with the background as well as the muted colors. Garrett Krodel, 4, of Batavia,
I took this photo in my backyard. I was watering the flowers and saw this yellow swallowtail fly in for a drink of nectar from this vibrant pink zinnia flower. Sallie Wiedemann of Elgin
I took this photo of X-Flight, a roller coaster at Six Flags Great America with my iPhone 5S yesterday since I did not have my camera equipment with me. I waited until the cars came into the frame and took the shot against a cloudy sky. I made some adjustments to contrast and lighting in post-processing as well as making it black and white. I also slightly cropped it to clean up some distracting elements toward the edges of the photo. Angela Cichosz of Carol Stream
At the Volo Auto Museum, I photographed this car with the checkered floor reflecting off its body. The pattern of the floor distorts and moves with the contours of the car. Another car of similar style can be seen reflected off this car as well. I liked how the photo contains many different elements of pattern and shape as well as good contrast and lighting. Angela Cichosz of Carol Stream
I took this photo while hiking through West Branch Forest Preserve in Carol Stream. This tree caught my eye with its tangled roots and its gravity-defying lean over Deep Quarry Lake. The choppy waters beneath it had a teal-colored hue. I took 3 handheld, vertically-oriented photos using a wide-angle lens and made an HDR composite in Photomatix. Angela Cichosz of Carol Stream
A Monarch butterfly lands on a man's shoe last week. Joan Farrell of Island Lake
The sun's rays flicker across the woods during sunset at Busse Woods. Deb Marak of Arlington Heights
A honey bee heads for a sunflower in an Arlington Heights backyard. Fred Share of Arlington Heights
A cow moose with her young offspring in some sagebrush at Grand Teton National Park on September 25, 2013 John Sanfillippo of Hoffman Estates
The sun set son Pistakee Lake on August 7, 2014 in Fox Lake. Marty Krogh of Ingleside
A young boy sits on the curb waiting for the Evanston Fourth of July Parade. Annie Cebulski of Lake Zurich
