Cary Lions award scholarships
The Cary Lions Club recently awarded three $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors residing within the 60013 ZIP code and attending Cary Grove, Prairie Ridge or Marian Central high schools.
Area high school seniors competed in areas of scholastics, community volunteering and organizational leadership. Each applicant also wrote a short essay on "Community Volunteering."
The review committee was made up of several members of the Cary Lions Club who reviewed the applications in the blind for confidentiality and ranked each applicant in each category. Scholarship Chairman Lion Mitch Cohen compiled the reviewers category rankings to determine the highest combined scores to determine the winners.
The announcements were made at their respective Cary-Grove and Marian High School scholarship award ceremonies.
The scholarship winners and their families were guests at recent a Cary Lions Club meeting. Part of their essays were shared with the club members and guests and the three winners received their $1,000 scholarship checks.
Two of this year's winners were from Cary-Grove High School. Griffin Dempsey will be attending the University of Minnesota with a planned major in mechanical engineering and Sarah Kendeigh will be attending the University of Iowa, majoring in secondary education with an emphasis in mathematics.
The third scholarship winner, a graduate from Marian Central was Samuel Rita who will be attending the University of Dayton as a science major with the intent to continue on to pre-med.
