Acid spill closed streets near White Sox ballpark

A tanker truck leaking acid on the Chicago's South Side prompted authorities to temporarily close a train platform and streets near U.S. Cellular Field while a hazardous materials crew responded.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford tells WBBM-TV that about 500 gallons of muriatic acid were leaked from the tanker on Wednesday afternoon. Langford says the truck was carrying about 3,600 gallons of the acid. There were no injuries. Firefighters used a mobile ventilation unit to keep fumes away from the baseball park.

Police said a Metra station, expressway exits and some nearby streets had also been closed. Chicago Transit Authority trains temporarily bypassed the 35th Street Red Line station.

Fans attending the afternoon White Sox game against the Texas Rangers were directed to use other expressway ramps.
