Daily Herald subscribers get jump start on football season

While the Bears must wait to kick off their NFL preseason tonight at Soldier Field, Daily Herald subscribers got a jump on the season Thursday night in Elk Grove Village.

Veteran Chicago sports journalists Hub Arkush, Bob LeGere and Joe Aguilar hosted a Q&A session with more than 100 Daily Herald subscribers to talk about football from the preps to the pros in a wide-ranging discussion at Coach's Corner, a popular pizzeria and sports grill.

The restaurant served fans a buffet featuring its award-winning cheese sticks, pizza, sandwiches and chicken wings.

Daily Herald columnist Barry Rozner was the emcee for the program, directing Bears questions to Arkush and LeGere, with Aguilar touching the prep football season, which begins Monday.

Football fans in attendance also got a taste of what the new Chicago Football magazine and website (chicagofootball.com) will offer under the direction of Arkush, the former publisher of Pro Football Weekly.

Working with editors from Shaw Media, the Daily Herald and the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Football magazine will go beyond coverage of the Bears and the rest of the NFL and offer a broader range of high school football coverage along with college football features.

The current edition is on sale now at Barnes & Noble and other newsstands and at chicagofootball.com.
