Solve gang violence first, Sen. Durbin

Solve gang violence first, Sen. Durbin

In an Aug. 4 letter headlined "Not a border crisis, a humanity one" in the Aug. 4 Daily Herald, the writer is standing up for Senator Durbin. It seems that the good senator has been catching some flack for spending time in support of the youngsters coming over our southern border.

The youngsters are said to be coming from South America and leaving their homeland because of gang violence. A number I remember seeing in our Chicago area newspapers is/was 57,000 have already illegally crossed into the USA.

It is a nice humanitarian gesture, however, when or after Sen. Durbin and others in Chicago politics figure out how to prevent gang killings in Chicago. What is the average per year now - 500 killed per year in Chicago each year?

Sen. Durbin and the others best attend to the business at hand before they start saving others. I for one do not see gang shooting as a sport. Fix the home problems first, or can't they?

What we really need is a new crop of politicians in Illinois.
