HUD seek $300,000 reimbursement from Moline

MOLINE, Ill. - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development wants the Moline Housing Authority to repay $300,000 found to have been inappropriately used.

The Moline Dispatch reports HUD's inspector general conducted an audit of Moline's Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program after a citizen complained about lack of oversight and poor administration of the program.

The audit found Moline's housing authority overpaid more than $227,000 in Section 8 funds and underpaid more than $6,000 in housing assistance and utility allowances. It also fund the agency used federal funds to pay ineligible expenses, including meals, amusement park trips, plaques and gift cards for tenants and employees.

Although Moline Housing Authority director John Afoun says the errors were not deliberate, but the agency will comply with the reimbursement request.
