Suspect dead after LA County hostage standoff

PICO RIVERA, Calif. - Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies have shot and killed a parolee who held a woman hostage during an eight-hour standoff. But a bystander also has died.

A sheriff's statement says 24-year-old Cedric Ramirez died when deputies stormed a Pico Rivera home around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2.

Ramirez was wanted for vehicle theft and being an ex-felon in possession of a gun.

The standoff started after Ramirez fled from deputies and broke into the home, where he twice traded gunfire with deputies.

A 54-year-old man in the home was shot. Deputies managed to pull him from the doorway, but he died at the scene.

Authorities say Ramirez then barricaded himself in the home, taking a 60-year-old woman hostage. She was rescued after the standoff and wasn't injured.
