Vandals to $6,600 in damage to Des Plaines school

Vandals did an estimated $6,600 in damage to Orchard Place Elementary School, 2727 S. Maple St., Des Plaines, according to police reports.

Vandals poured a bucket of black primer on a playground slide and another bucket on the concrete by a basketball hoop between 6 p.m. July 17 and 6 a.m. July 18. Contractors working on the school's roof left their equipment and materials by the playground, reports said. Damage was estimated at $1,000.

Between 4:30 p.m. July 22 and 5 a.m. July 23, vandals struck again. They opened a 5-gallon bucket of roofing tar and poured it on the playground rubber surface, poked holes in five bundles of roofing foam and emptied the foam fire suppressant out of two 5-gallon fire extinguishers around the playground area. Loss was estimated at $5,600.
