West Dundee man, 44, killed in I-290 crash

A 44-year-old West Dundee man was killed Friday night in a crash on I-290 at Higgins Road in Schaumburg, authorities said Saturday.

The driver of a 1999 GMC Yukon Denali was traveling west on 290 at Route 72 when he struck the concrete median wall several times before hitting the back of a parked construction vehicle pulling an arrow board, Illinois State Police said.

The driver, Richard Velez of the 600 block of Ryan Lane, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:51 p.m. Friday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

State police said the arrow board absorbed most of the impact, while the construction vehicle sustained minor damage.

Police said there were no passengers in the GMC vehicle.

The driver of the construction vehicle was not injured.
