Victim identified in bike-train crash

A bicyclist was killed on Thursday night after being hit by a Metra train near the Cumberland stop in Des Plaines. The accident happened shortly before 6 p.m. and involved a train that was outbound from Chicago, said Michael Gillas, spokesman for Metra. All Union-Pacific Northwest trains were stopped for about 80 minutes to investigate the accident, but resumed service around 7:20 p.m. Thursday, he said.

The female cyclist was identified as Amy Carolyn Thier by Des Plaines police, who said she was pronounced dead at the scene. According to witnesses, she was riding her bike across the tracks when the collision occurred, police said. The case is still under investigation.
