Illinois boy to meet Coast Guard rescuers

A 9-year-old boy is scheduled to reunite with the members of the Coast Guard helicopter crew who rescued him earlier this month.

Tommy Alter of Highland Park plans to meet with crew members Tuesday afternoon at Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling.

Coast Guard officials say Alter, his aunt and cousin had gone out on Lake Michigan in rented kayaks July 11 near Peninsula State Park in Door County, Wisconsin, but did not return as expected.

After an all-night search, officials say a crew from the Royal Canadian Air Force located Alter and his family around 6 a.m. the next day about 10 miles offshore. The Coast Guard crew took them to Menominee, Michigan.

Officials said no injuries were reported and all three kayakers were wearing life vests.
