Arlington Hts. mom dies saving boy in Wisconsin lake

Family and friends are mourning the death of an Arlington Heights woman who died after jumping into a northern Wisconsin lake to save the 9-year-old godson of her friend. Karen Wessel, 47, was able to rescue the child from Star Lake, but she later went under. "She is a hero for saving the life of that 9-year-old boy," said Janice Potocki, her close sister who was also on the trip. Full story.

Bensenville community rallying to help grieving family

Donations are being accepted for the Bensenville family of a 4-year-old boy who lost his life Wednesday afternoon in a tragic house fire. A volunteer organization in Bensenville called The Helping Hands is working with the Bensenville Fire Protection District to collect donations for the family of Martin Pletz. Authorities said they're still investigating the cause of the fire. Full story.

Mundelein teen gets second chance at play

A Mundelein High School graduate will take the stage tonight for a very special performance. Monica Tipperreiter had been preparing for the role of Lily in "The Secret Garden," when a week before opening night in April, doctors discovered a golf ball-sized tumor in Monica's brain. The tumor was surgically removed and diagnosed as benign. Tonight, Monica will perform with her classmates in a special encore presentation of the musical at the school. Full story.

McHenry man charged with murder

A 62-year-old McHenry man is facing murder charges after authorities say they have gathered additional evidence connecting him to last year's discovery of a dead body in his house. William J. Ross was taken into custody yesterday afternoon by McHenry County sheriff's officers and federal marshals. In November, deputies discovered the body of a person who "appeared to have been deceased for some time," officials said. Full story.

Fremd graduate killed in California motorcycle crash

A funeral is planned for this weekend for a 22-year-old Palatine native who died in a California motorcycle crash. Alexander Mackenzie Williams, a Fremd High School graduate, was killed in a two-vehicle crash July 20 near the Del Mar Fairgrounds, about a half-hour north of San Diego. Authorities say Williams lost control of his motorcycle and swerved into oncoming traffic. Full story.

Missing Palatine man found in California

A missing Palatine man will be returning home after he turned up safe and unharmed Thursday in Santa Monica, California, after police say he left an assisted-living facility the night before and boarded a flight at O'Hare International Airport. Palatine police issued an alert Wednesday night after 63-year-old Leon Joffe left the assisted-living center. Full story.

Arlington trainer Catalano hospitalized with pneumonia

Longtime Arlington Park trainer Wayne Catalano remains hospitalized in critical condition after being diagnosed with pneumonia, according to his wife. Catalano was admitted Tuesday to the intensive care unit at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates. He had been feeling ill last week at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, and on the plane trip back home Saturday "he was praying the whole flight because he felt so bad," said his wife, Renee. Full story.
