Grayslake Central student's body found in Third Lake

Friends and family are mourning the death of a junior at Grayslake Central High School after his body was pulled from the water of Third Lake Monday night. Lake County sheriff's police and friends identified the victim as Matt Reed, who had been on a pontoon boat Monday afternoon with six friends when they went into the water for a swim. U-46 board rejects Elgin charter school proposal

Despite pleas from dozens of parents, the Elgin Area School District U-46 school board Monday night denied a proposal to create a new math and science elementary charter school in Elgin. The vote was 6-1 to deny the Elgin Charter School Initiative's proposal, which drew boos from the crowd. "This is not the only hard decision we make. Police: Speeding truck plowed into cars on I-55

Police say a speeding semitrailer truck caused a serious crash that killed four women and injured four others Monday afternoon on Interstate 55 near Channahon. The truck was passing vehicles in the left lane before abruptly changing lanes ahead of a construction zone and plowing into several other vehicles, authorities said. A separate crash on I-55 involving two semitrailer trucks took the life of a truck driver. Full story.

East Dundee police continue to look into woman's stabbing

East Dundee police said they planned to recanvass the neighborhood last night and could continue today as they look for clues in the stabbing death of an 85-year-old woman. Mildred "Dodie" Darrington, who lived alone at her home, was found dead early Friday and believed to have died 24 hours before. Full story.

Man stabbed woman in Elgin, police say

Police are investigating the circumstances of a domestic disturbance and stabbing that occurred Monday night in Elgin, leaving a 42-year-old woman and a 56-year-old injured. Authorities say the man stabbed the woman, while the man's injuries appeared to be self-inflicted. Full story.

Mount Prospect man identified as Fox River drowning victim

A 27-year-old Mount Prospect has been identified as the swimmer who drowned Sunday in the Fox River near Carpentersville. An autopsy conducted Monday on the body of Emanuel Mendieta-Ramirez found the official cause of death to be drowning, authorities said. Mendieta-Ramirez and two friends were fishing on the river Sunday morning when Mendieta-Ramirez and one of his friends talked about swimming across the river. Full story.

Authorities: Driver's blood alcohol was .142 in Naperville quarry deaths

The Geneva man charged with drunken driving in a crash that killed two passengers had a blood alcohol concentration of .142 early Saturday morning after his car plunged into a water-filled Naperville quarry, authorities said Monday. Szot escaped the car when it sunk in the quarry but his passengers, Mihirtej Boddupalli, 21, of Lisle, and Sajaad Safiullah Syed, 21, of Naperville, died. Szot is awaiting arraignment on Aug. 11 on charges of aggravated DUI involving death and reckless homicide. Full story.
