Illinois Supreme Court to appoint judge for vacancy

Associated Presss

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis has announced an application process for filling a vacancy in the 7th Judicial Subcircuit of Cook County.

Judge Anthony L. Burrell died on May 14 - creating the vacancy. Burrell had been a Cook County circuit judge since 2002.

The state Constitution requires that vacancies are filled temporarily by Supreme Court appointment until the next general election.

Theis will recommend an appointee to the Supreme Court after applicants are screened and evaluated.

The Alliance of Bar Associations - 11 bar groups in the Cook County area and the Chicago Bar Association - will conduct an evaluation. A special judicial screening committee Theis established last year will also review candidates.

Details and instructions for applications are available online.
