Daily Herald column wins auto media award

Matt Avery, writer of the Daily Herald's weekly Classic Recollections feature on collector cars and their suburban owners, was named a silver medalist in the 2013 International Automotive Media Awards.

Avery won in the newspaper column-writing category. The awards are judged annually by the International Society for Vehicle Preservation, based in Tucson, Arizona.

The Best of Newspapers winner is Michael Knight, whose article “Mark Martin Says He's Ready to Stop Racing” in The Arizona Republic, earned the top spot in the News category.

Avery, a professional photographer and freelance writer from Palatine, owns Prestige MotorCar Photography. He has written Classic Recollections for the Daily Herald's Sunday Auto section since 2010.

The three Daily Herald columns submitted for judging profiled the Libertyville-based Midwest Picture Car Group, which supplies vintage autos for movies and TV shows filmed in the Chicago area; several owners attending the 25th annual Chevy Nomad Association convention in Itasca last July; and classic camper enthusiasts who organize one of the largest vintage trailer rallies in the Midwest.

This is the 23rd year for the society's media competition.

Avery's columns run each week on dailyherald.com. You can find a collection of his colummns at http://www.dailyherald.com/topics/Avery-Matt/.
