Madigan opposing ComEd, Peoples Gas rate increases

Illinois' attorney general is trying to block rate increases proposed by ComEd and Peoples Gas.

Lisa Madigan filed a report this week with the Illinois Commerce Commission seeking to reduce a $128 million gas rate increase requested by Peoples Gas by $74 million. She claims the utility's costs are significantly higher than those at other Midwest gas companies.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Madigan calls it "shocking" that Peoples Gas is seeking a rate hike. A Peoples Gas spokeswoman noted that Chicago's aging infrastructure requires "unique updates."

Madigan says in another ICC filing that a plan by ComEd to pay $87 million in employee bonuses from a requested $275 million rate increase is illegal.

ComEd says its incentive program was designed specifically to comply with state statute.
