Flags with ads on them against U.S. code

For several years I have received an American flag on or around Memorial Day with a business card attached, stuck in my front lawn. I feel that this is being used for advertising and is not permitted by U.S. flag code, which states, "The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever."

Now, I must remember that the flag is on my property, and I'm liable for anything that happens on my property. The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water or merchandise.

When we wish to get rid of a flag, it does not go in the garbage. When the flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

When a flag gets to this point, I bring it to the VFW at 400 East Devon Ave. in Elk Grove Village and put in their "flag box." The VFW will destroy the flag in a dignified way.

Proper respect to the American flag is important. We all should practice it.
