Family of man killed by beanbag gun sues police

The family of a 95-year-old man who was fatally shot with a beanbag gun by a South suburban police officer has sued six officers and the town where they work.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, relatives of John Wrana filed the federal lawsuit against the village of Park Forest and its officers Friday. In the suit, the World War II veteran's family claims the officers should have known the beanbag fired at 190 mph by the gun would seriously injure or kill him.

Wrana was shot during a standoff at an assisted living center where he lived. Police said they were called after Wrana refused medication and that he turned violent and threatened paramedics with a knife.

Park Forest police did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.
