White Sox team up with foundation to beat nonsmoking lung cancer

The Chicago White and the Janice McArdle Cancer Research Foundation team up for the second Non-Smoking Lung Cancer Awareness Day on June 10 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.

Game time when the White Sox take on the Detroit Tigers is 7:10 p.m.

"We want to get the word out about the nonsmoking lung cancer," said Dr. George McArdle of Naperville. "We hope people can join us for the game and hopefully raise some funds for the foundation."

McArdle started The Janice McArdle Cancer Research Foundation, "Jannie's Hope," in honor of his wife, Jannie, a vibrant and active nonsmoker who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2008. Like many, Jannie and her family were shocked to learn she had an advanced stage of lung cancer, particularly because she was health-conscious and didn't smoke.

Knowing an early diagnosis could have provided a different outcome, Jannie's family and friends are passionate about funding research so things will be different for others who have nonsmoking lung cancer.

To date, the organization has raised more than $250,000 for lung cancer research.

Jannie McArdle was a "giant Sox fan" so pairing with the South Side team was a logical choice. Net proceeds of ticket sales will benefit lung cancer research programs supported by the foundation.

"We had a great time last year but anticipate three times the amount of people attend this year's fundraiser," said event coordinator Judy Phillip of Extra Edge. "The White Sox organization has been extremely helpful in putting together this event and the team at Jannie's Hope is very grateful."

Besides the game, McArdle is hosting a pregame tailgating party from 5 to 7 p.m. in Lot A, adjacent to the ballpark. It is a family-friendly event so kids, friends and neighbors are welcome to celebrate Jannie McArdle and to give hope to others. Complimentary food, beer, wine and soft drinks will be served.

Game tickets are $22 and must be purchased through Jannie's Hope to have proceeds donated to the Janice McArdle Cancer Research Foundation at www.jannieshope.org/events/wsgame.
