Naperville man dies in I-55 crash

A Naperville man died yesterday after his SUV veered off Interstate 55 near Interstate 355 in Lemont, police said. Vernon H. Joy Jr., 71, was traveling south when the vehicle left the road and crashed into a utility pole. He might have suffered a medical problem before the crash. Full story.

Marmion coach on the mend after freak accident

Marmion Academy coach Ed DeGeeter is out of the hospital, six days after being hit in the head with a shot put during warm-ups Friday at a sectional track and field meet at Elgin High School. DeGeeter, 42, of Naperville, was standing well outside the throwing sector when the accident happened. Full story.

Murderer sorry for Mount Prospect crime

Jean Louis Wattecamps, a 52-year-old airline baggage handler, bought lunch for the two men charged with killing him in 2010 in his Mount Prospect apartment. He was kind and gentle, his family said. One of the two men, former gang member Marko Guardiola, 41, of Mount Prospect, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced Wednesday to 33 years in prison. Full story.

Stabbing victim forgave killer, sister testifies

Laura Englehardt forgave her killer, her sister Amanda testified yesterday during the first day of D'Andre Howard's murder trial. Howard, Amanda's former fiance, is charged with stabbing to death three members of her family after the couple argued. Full story.
