Lake Park's challenge of Conant will wait for resolution

There will be plenty of drama from the get-go when No. 2 Conant and No. 15 Lake Park resume their suspended game from Tuesday.

The semifinal of the Class 4A Hoffman Estates softball regional was tied at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning with senior Stephanie Sturino leading off the Lancers.

During her at-bat the lightning detector sounded and the teams left the field.

They will return today at 4 p.m. to resume the game.

The second semifinal between No. 7 Schaumburg (23-8) and No. 10 Hoffman Estates (15-14) will follow immediately with the championship still set for 11 a.m. Saturday.

Lake Park (13-20) got on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the top of the second.

Junior Karley Wolf and senior Jordan Dallmann led off with back-to-back singles.

The Cougars (23-5) recorded two outs on third baseman's Rachel O'Malley's putout and a groundout to second baseman Telly Hunter, which put runners on second and third.

That's when junior Marissa Catalano singled and an error on the play allowed both runners to score.

Junior Hailey Rothstein's opposite-field home run over the left-field fence to lead off the bottom of the third cut the lead in half.

Sturino answered in the top of the fourth with a two-out home run over the left-field fence to make it 3-1.

The Cougars used two more home runs - both by catcher Dream Aaron - to eventually tie the game.

Aaron led of the bottom of the fourth with a blast over the center-field fence making it 3-2.

She then led off the bottom of the sixth with a shot that just went over the outstretched glove of center fielder Ashlyn Worcester to tie the game at 3-3.

Hunter followed with a bunt single but Lake Park junior pitcher Elisabeth Brown retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.

Sophomore Kim Neuman started the game for Conant and classmate Kali Schumacher came on in relief in the third inning.
