Dan Shanower among veterans honored in DuPage

Suburbs far and wide conducted solemn ceremonies or held parades to mark Memorial Day on Monday.

As it has done for years, Naperville paid tribute to local hero Dan Shanower, a Naval commander who was killed while serving at the Pentagon building that was attacked by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001.

The Naperville ceremony is traditionally held at the Shanower Memorial along the downtown Riverwalk.

Wheaton's Memorial Day parade stepped off at 10 a.m. in downtown, headed west on Wesley Street and south on West Street to Wheaton Cemetery, where its annual ceremony was held.
