Softball: Fox Valley roundup Monday, May 19

Huntley, Cary-Grove split: After taking a 3-1 loss to start the day thanks to a rain-shortened makeup, the Red Raiders (17-14, 7-5) rebounded and won 6-2 to close out the day in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action. Resumed in the fifth inning, the game from April 28 saw the Trojans (15-11, 7-5) take the lead in the sixth and hang on for the victory. Amanda DeGroote earned the win, giving up only 1 run on 7 hits, while Kateri Conklin took the loss. In the second game, the script was flipped as the Red Raiders scored 4 in the fifth to ensure the split. Megan Larson, Haley Spannraft and Megan Baczewski all homered for Huntley. Brianne Prank homered for Cary-Grove as well. Conklin pitched again and was able to earn the win, going all 7 innings, giving up 7 hits and 2 runs. Lauren Stanley took the loss in relief, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits.

McHenry 10, Crystal Lake South 0: The Gator offense could not keep up with McHenry, falling in 5 innings in FVC Valley play. Sam McLean had a pair of singles and a stolen base to lead an offense that only managed 5 hits. Gator pitcher Sam Burgard took the loss.

Prairie Ridge 16, Dundee-Crown 2: A 7-run first inning was too much for the Chargers (3-16-1, 0-11) to overcome as they fell in FVC Valley action. While the Chargers only mustered 6 hits, 3 went for extra bases. But, it was Jessica McVicker's single that drove in the only run, scoring Mandy Moore. Lauren Girard took the loss after failing to get out of the first inning.

Larkin 6, Streamwood 4: The Royals (4-20, 2-12) were able to hold off a Sabre (4-16, 3-12) comeback and win an Upstate Eight River matchup. Holly Zdroik had a pair of singles to go with a pair of RBI to led the Royals' offense. Pitcher Sarah Hansen went all 7 innings and gave up 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 4. The only Sabre Hansen seemed to have trouble with was Kaitlyn Hedger. Hedger smashed 2 solo homers to pace the offense. Jessica Daley took the loss in the circle after allowing 10 hits and 6 runs, though only 3 were earned.

IC Catholic Prep 4, St. Edward 1: The Green Wave (15-10, 7-6) could only muster 1 hit on the road against IC Catholic Prep in a Suburban Christian loss. Devyn Ernst had the lone hit while teammate Lindsay Zdroik drove in the only run. Zdroik also took the loss in the circle after allowing 4 runs on 7 hits, finishing with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk.

DeKalb 7, Burlington Central 2: Windy conditions caused trouble for the Rockets (19-9) as their offense failed to keep pace with nonconference opponent DeKalb. Bekah Harnish had 3 out of the team's 5 hits, including 2 triples. Emily Kisch was in the circle and took the loss after 5 innings of work with 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits.
