Glenbard West cracked a pretty mean streak.

Vernon Hills had won its Cougar Classic volleyball tournament for the last four years.

But Glenbard West swept the four-time defending champs in the title match on Saturday, 25-16, 25-22.

Vernon Hills, which had won the championship in seven of the previous eight years, last finished second in 2003.

Over five matches of the tournament, Michael Heinz, Max Spiglanin and Lemuel Turner racked up the kills for Vernon Hills with 27, 24 and 20 kills respectively. Dylan DeBoer added 16 kills for the Cougars.

Setter Ryan Opitz finished with 89 assists, 10 digs, 8 blocks and 6 kills.

Heinz led Vernon Hills with 24 digs while Spiglanin and Adam Weinberg added 20 digs apiece.

Turner had a team-high 10 blocks and 3 aces for the Cougars.

Fremd Invite: Mundelein struggled at the Fremd Invite, dropping all five of its matches.

The Mustangs lost to West Aurora (19-25, 24-26), South Elgin (20-25, 17-25), Fremd (22-25, 26-27), Rolling Meadows (25-22, 24-26, 10-15) and Elk Grove (16-25, 17-25).

For the tournament, Sam Nelson had 27 kills while Danny Lake had 15 kills and Luke Ramer, Anthony Fiore and Roman Tkachuk added 12 kills apiece. Tkachuk also had a team-high 9 blocks.

David Everding had 41 assists for Mundelein while Scott Heffernan added 24 assists.

Fiore led the Mustangs (12-22) with 4 aces.
