Cougars snap four-game losing streak

The Kane County Cougars ended a streak of 21 scoreless innings with 3 runs in the fifth and went on to beat the Quad City River Bandits 4-2 to break a four-game losing skid before 6,065 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva on Friday night.

With two outs in the Cougars' fifth inning, Trey Martin walked and scored on Daniel Lockhart's RBI double. Carlos Penalver reached on an error, putting runners at the corners. David Bote sent a grounder up the middle that Thomas Lindauer gloved, but his backhanded toss attempting a forceout pulled the second baseman off the bag. Penalver scored and Ben Carhart followed with a bloop RBI single to give the Cougars (27-14) a 3-1 lead. Penalver contributed an RBI double in the seventh.

Starter Paul Blackburn (4-1) allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 6 nnings with 8 strikeouts and a walk. Tyler Bremer recorded his second save.

The series continues today at 6:30 p.m. in Geneva when the Cougars' Tyler Skulina (1-1, 3.86) opposes Andrew Thurman (2-2, 4.97).
