Warm memories of a 9th-grade teacher

What a coincidence that I just read the touching essay in the Herald about 102-year-old Mrs. Irwin, a former teacher who made a lasting impression on the author. Tonight some classmates and I are going to a wake at Sacred Heart Convent in Wilmette for our 102-year-old freshman teacher, Sister Marina. Five years ago, while celebrating our class's 50th anniversary at our yearly alumnae luncheon, I had a huge thank-you card for her that so many of us signed. I received a note back saying how much that meant to her, and I quote, "As I read the signatures, I picture each of my girls in her place where she sat in our homeroom on the second floor. Remember?" I may not remember where I sat 55 years ago, but I do remember you, Sister. God bless you and I know you will watch over your girls.
