Driver injured when car strikes fuel truck in Elk Grove

Elk Grove firefighters extricated a woman whose car collided with a fuel truck on Higgins Road Sunday morning.

Elk Grove Fire Battalion Chief Mike Sellers said the crash took place about 9 a.m. midway between Arlington Heights Road and Route 53. When firefighters arrived they found a semitrailer 100 yards west of an overturned Chevy Impala.

The Chevy was on its roof, and the woman who had been driving it was trapped in the vehicle, he said.

Sellers said there was initial concern with the stability of the vehicle, so stabilization devices were deployed. There was also concern, he said, about possible fire, so hose lines were pulled.

Meanwhile, fire personnel used an extrication tool first to try to gain access to the woman through the passenger and driver's side door.

She eventually was extricated through driver's door.

The woman, who appeared to suffer minor injuries, was taken by ambulance to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. The truck's driver was not injured.

Both vehicles were westbound on Higgins Road, when one of the vehicles - information on which one was not provided - entered the lane occupied by the other, officials said. The accident is under investigation by the Illinois State Police, Sellers said.
