Girls water polo / MSL title game preview

Wheeling (16-7) at Conant (23-5)

When: 6 p.m. Thursday

Outlook: The host Cougars are making their first-ever appearance in the overall Mid-Suburban League title game, while Wheeling has regularly been one of the top teams in the East Division. Conant made it through a tough West Division without a loss, while Wheeling's key win came against Hersey in Game 9 of the East slate as the Wildcats finished with 1 loss. Conant might have a slight edge in terms of depth and common experience, as Carmen Rosas, Angie Skittone and standout goalie Maddy Demaret form the core of a group that's been together and steadily improving for three seasons. Junior Theresa Godlewski leads Wheeling along with seniors Rachel Ropski and Emily Sowa. Godlewski has been a terror of late as she makes a case for all-state consideration with games such as a 10-goal outburst against Barrington. Wheeling will look to force turnovers and then find Godlewski, while Conant will set Rosas frequently in the 2-meter position and look for plays to develop from there. Conant has earned the No. 1 seed in next week's Palatine sectional, while Wheeling is No. 3 in the Mundelein complex.
