IU considers life sciences hub at former hospital

Indiana University officials are working on plans for taking over the old Wishard Hospital complex in downtown Indianapolis and converting it into a hub for health science students and researchers.

The former hospital on the edge of the IUPUI campus closed in December with the opening of the new Eskenazi Hospital nearby.

IU medical school Dean Jay Hess tells the Indianapolis Business Journal the Wishard site could provide classroom paces for thousands of students from all health sciences programs, with IU's public health and dentistry schools considering moving there.

A center that helps IU researchers work with businesses is already looking to move to the Wishard site.

Officials say the possible $200 million project could involve demolishing about half the Wishard complex and remodeling remaining parts.
