Woman shot in leg in Elgin

A 19-year-old Elgin woman was shot in the leg Thursday night on the city's near west side, police said.

Police learned that the woman and two other people were walking on the Highland Avenue bridge when a vehicle carrying several people drove past, Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said. An argument erupted between the two groups just west of the bridge and someone from the vehicle fired multiple shots, he said.

Police were called about 10:20 p.m.

The woman was treated at Presence St. Joseph Hospital and released with a superficial leg wound that was a bit more than a graze, Theriault said.

Police closed Highland Avenue and State Street for about an hour while they investigated, Theriault said.

“We cleared that up as soon as we could. However, our highest priority is investigating the shooting,” Theriault said.

A description of the vehicle and suspect are not available.
