The local Altrusa Woman of the Year Award began in 1950 when Harriet Armstrong was recognized as the first recipient. Since then, a long line of dedicated local women have been honored for their volunteer service to the greater Elgin area community.

"Dr. Mueller has been an inspiration to many," said Dr. Clare Ollayos, Altrusa Woman of the Year committee chair. "As a physician she has provided quality and compassionate care for her patients and community education. As a volunteer, Dr. Mueller has contributed many hours of service."

Mueller graduated from Augustana College with a B.A. in Chemistry. She earned her M.D. at the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine and her masters of health professions education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is board certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians. She speaks English, Spanish, French and German.

She has been affiliated with Elgin Family Physicians since 1991 and has been recognized with many honors including the People Pillar Award, Sherman Hospital, 2008; Teaching Excellence Award - PA Program, 1991 and Resident Teacher of the Year, 1991.

She currently is a member of the American Medical Women's Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, Doctors Ought to Care, Illinois Academy of Family Physicians, Kane County Medical Society, Illinois State Medical Society and Advocate Sherman Hospital/Presence St. Joseph Hospital CME Consortium co-chair.

Mueller's community involvement is extensive. She has served in a volunteer capacity as the medical director of the Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice overseeing the case management of patients for the all volunteer organization since 2010.

She has been involved in a variety of fundraising efforts over the past 20 years in her leadership capacities as a past chair/member of the Zonta Club of Northwest Cook County and board member of the Well Child Center from 1994-2000.

Mueller strongly believes in providing health care and wellness education. Since 2002, she has hosted the "House Calls" radio program on Elgin's WRMN 1410 AM radio station, following in the footsteps of Dr. Richard Powers of Elgin, the original host of the program. Twice a month, she offers practical information over the airwaves with a variety of guests covering many topics, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, children's health, alternative medicine and more. She believes in expanding the horizon of health education to the public with the goal of better health and prevention in the Fox Valley area.

She and her husband, Don Winsauer, have been married for nearly 20 years, and have two children, Patricia, 18, and Daniel, 15. They live in West Dundee.
