Boys volleyball / Lake County roundup

Lemuel Turner racked up 8 kills and 3 blocks, as Vernon Hills' boys volleyball team defeated Mundelein 25-15, 25-14 in North Suburban Conference action Wednesday night.

Vernon Hills (12-7, 5-1) also received 5 kills from Michael Heinz, four apiece from Dylan DeBoer and Max Spiglanin, and three from Tristan Klintworth. Ryan Opitz dished out 22 assists on 39-of-40 setting. DeBoer also had a team-high 11 digs.

"We played with much greater focus and intensity tonight," Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry said. "We shrugged off the errors more quickly, and we made better decisions with our attacking, especially when we were out of system.

"The team's getting used to Opitz (who recently returned to the lineup) and his tempo," Curry added. "Dylan DeBoer played great defense tonight. We knew Mundelein's setter liked to attack, and it was a point of emphasis not to let him get easy dump kills. Dylan picked up a number of them and gave us offensive opportunities."

Mundelein (11-13, 3-2) got 3 kills from Sam Nelson. Setter David Everding was 38-of-40 setting with 6 assists and served 2 aces.

Libertyville d. Grant: Chris Akers slammed 10 kills and Konnor McCormack added 9 kills and 6 blocks for the Wildcats in their 25-8, 19-25, 25-14 win.

Libertyville also got 4 kills from Marc Laska, 5 blocks from Zach Hauser and 4 blocks from Pete Feely. Kyle Wininger lofted 24 assists.

"Our goal was to be consistent on our side of the net," Wildcats coach Jenny Smith said. "We failed in Set 2, but overall felt in control."

Grant's Jason Kaye had 6 kills, 4 blocks and an ace.

Lake Zurich d. Zion-Benton: Nate Amos pounded 10 kills, and Andrew Gilbertson had 9, as the Bears won 26-24, 25-21 to improve to 15-7 and 6-0 in the North Suburban Conference.

Pat Bush dished out 30 assists.

Stevenson d. Lake Forest: Eric Chang's 5 kills and Jesse Kesner's four helped the Patriots to the 25-18, 25-17 win in North Suburban Conference action.

Stevenson (10-13, 2-3) also got 3 kills from Josh Cliffer.
