Man charged with slapping child's mom, kidnapping

An Aurora man broke into a home Monday and struck his child's mother before driving away with the child, police said.

About 3:30 p.m., Kane County sheriff's deputies responded to a call that a man threw a brick through the window of a car parked on the 900 block of South Calhoun Street.

Police say Jonathan Phillips, 25, of the 900 block of Symphony Drive, then threw rocks at a second car parked there before kicking in the door of the home. He then struck his child's mother before taking his 1-year-old child and driving away, police said.

Eventually, the child was returned by acquaintances of Phillips.

Phillips was charged with home invasion, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated domestic battery, two counts of domestic battery and three counts of damage to property.

While investigating, deputies learned that Phillips struck his child's mother in the head and tried to strangle her at that same residence Friday, authorities said.

His bond was set at $500,000, and he is being held at the Kane County Adult Justice Center on a warrant for a parole violation.
