Letter written aboard the Titanic to be auctioned
LONDON - In April 1912, Esther Hart wrote home about her journey to a new life. "The sailors say we have had a wonderful passage up to now," said Hart, a passenger on the Titanic.
Hour later the ship struck an iceberg and sank, killing more than 1,500 people.
Hart survived, and so did the letter, inside a coat pocket.
The handwritten note is expected to sell for up to 100,000 pounds ($168,000) at an auction in England on Saturday.
Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said the letter was "quite simply the jewel in the crown of Titanic manuscript ephemera."
Prices for Titanic memorabilia have soared in recent years. In October a violin believed to have been played on the doomed vessel sank sold for more than 1 million pounds.
