Quagliano connects, and Wheeling wins

Wheeling senior Katie Quagliano hit and pitched her team to victory on Monday at Heritage Park.

Quagliano belted a two-out, bases-loaded double in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the host Wildcats softball team a 3-2 lead over visiting Prospect.

Nikki Mikosz, Christina Ambrose (2-for-3) and Alexa Fishman scored on Quagliano's big hit.

Anne Janulis's RBI groundout in the sixth got home Lauren Hart (triple) for Wheeling's final run in the 4-2 triumph.

The Wildcats improved to 2-6 and 1-2 in the Mid-Suburban East.

Emily Saenz had a triple for Prospect (3-7, 1-2) while Casey Lenski doubled and Maggie Pancini went 2-for-2.

"Prospect put a lot of balls in play but our defense made all the plays behind Katie, who shut them down after giving up 2 runs in the first inning," said Wheeling coach Mike Caringella.

Schaumburg 2, Hoffman Estates 0: Sophomore Paige Alt (4-1) recorded her second no-hitter while striking out 12 for the host Saxons (10-4, 3-0).

Christina Candotti doubled for the Saxons while teammates Natalie Napier (RBI), Roxanne Kakareka (RBI) and Shannon Felde each had singles against the Hawks (5-5, 1-2) in the MSL West game.

Elk Grove 14, Rolling Meadows 2 (5 inn.): Freshman Kylie Thomsen (2-0) earned the win with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in five innings.

Marjorie Sloan went 2-for-4 for the Grens (13-2, 2-1) and belted her fourth homer of the season.

Also sparking the visiting Grens' 15-hit attack were Becca Maher (2-for-4, double), Brianna Leach (2-for-3, 2 doubles), Brooke Barges (3-for-4, double), Alex Masnica (2-for-3), Shannon Taucher (2-for-4), Aleece Duffy (double), Melisssa Picchi (double).

For the third straight game, Rolling Meadows senior Grace Skorin belted a 2-out 2-run homer. This one went over the left field fence in the second inning. Chloe Prodanovic had a pair of double for Meadows (3-10, 0-3).

Buffalo Grove 2, Hersey 1: Host Buffalo Grove (5-5, 2-1) received a 5-hitter from junior Julia Camardo (4-3) who struck out 11 and walked none in the MSL East contest.

Senior Michelle Helminski (2-for-3) gave Hersey (7-5-1) a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth with a two-out homer to right center.

Cassie Zouras had the game's only other extra base hit with a double.

BG tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Caitlin Catino drew a two-out bases-loaded walk to bring home Cassie May.

BG got the decisive second run in the fifth when Jasmine Avalos was hit by a pitch and eventually came home on a passed ball with one out.

Conant 26, Palatine 4 (5 inn.): Junior Hailey Rothstein (4-for-5, 4 runs) belted 2 home runs and collected 7 RBI while senior Rachel O'Malley (4-for-4, 3 runs) belted a homer and double for 9 RBI for the visiting Cougars.

Other top hitters for the Cougars (6-0, 3-0) were DeeDee Durr (3-for-4, 4 runs), Telly Hunter (3-for-5, 3 runs, 4 RBI), double), Dream Aaron (4-for-5, 3 runs, 3 doubles, RBI), Alissa Wachal (2-for-5, double) and Rachel Falbo (2-for-2, double)

Sara Neumann (3-0) struck out two in four innings to notch the win while teammate Kali Schumacher threw an inning and had a pair of strikeouts.

Nora Walsh was 2-for-3 for Palatine (3-11, 0-3).

St. Viator 9, Nazareth 7: Trailing 7-6, host St. Viator rallied with 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to get the win and improve to 9-5.

Kristen Hackel (4-for-4) started the winning rally with a single followed by singles by Tess Kaiser (2 hits) and Gina Mastrodomenico (2 hits) which loaded the bases. Sophomore Olivia Michalik jumped on the first pitch and hammered it in the gap in left-center, clearing the bases.

Winning pitcher Sam Hogan (7-3) retired side in order in the seventh for the win.

Hogan, Michalik, Martha Hayes and Cameron Vanvalkenburg each had doubles for St. Viator.
