Cougars win fourth straight

Threats of rain didn't stop the Cougars from squeezing in their fourth straight win with a 6-1 decision in 6½ innings Sunday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.

For the first time in the series, the Captains took the first lead as Grant Fink's single brought in Cody Ferrell for a 1-0 Lake County advantage.

Once again the Cougars answered in the bottom of the first and took advantage of some Lake County mistakes. Ben Carhart singled with two outs to keep the inning alive. Yasiel Balaguert reached on an error and Carhart moved to third on the play.

A passed ball allowed Carhart to score and advanced Balaguert to second. After Jacob Rogers reached on a walk, 2 wild pitches and 2 passed balls sent brought in Balaguert and Rogers for a 3-1 lead.

The wet conditions might have come in to play in the bottom of the fourth when Ferrell tried to catch Daniel Lockhart's flyball to center, but the ball popped out of his glove. Trey Martin sent Lockhart home with a single to make it 4-1.

The offense continued in the fifth inning as Carhart and Balaguert quickly became baserunners. Danny Canela singled to bring home Carhart and Lockhart followed with an RBI single. After five innings the Cougars led 6-1.

It was decided to end the game after the top of the seventh inning, with more rain expected in the forecast.

Justin Amlung (2-0) pitched 4 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits and striking out five. Mitch Brown (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing 3 unearned runs in the first.

The Cougars hit the road for a six-game trip. Monday's contest will be played against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark. Jen-Ho Tseng is scheduled to pitch for the Cougars, and the Hot Rods' pitcher has yet to be announced. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
