Balanced Vernon Hills stops Libertyville

Vernon Hills' boys volleyball team used a balanced attack to defeat visiting Libertyville 25-21, 25-13 in the teams' North Suburban Conference opener Wednesday night.

Lem Turner hit 7 of 7 with 4 kills and 2 blocks to lead the way for the Cougars, who improved to 2-2 overall. Vernon Hills also received 4 kills apiece from Dylan DeBoer, Michael Heinz and Max Spiglanin. Cory Levin and sophomore Jared Bennett each lofted 9 assists. Bennett also chalked 2 aces and 2 kills.

Libertyville was led by Zach Hauser's 4 kills and 4 blocks. Chris Akers had 3 kills for the Wildcats.

"We kept it pretty tight the first set, but in the end unforced errors were our downfall," Libertyville coach Jenny Smith said. "We're looking forward to correcting them for Deerfield (Thursday night)."

Lakes d. North Chicago: Richard Galat hammered 7 kills in the Eagles' 25-12, 25-22 win.

Lakes also received 4 kills apiece from Dalton Solbrig and Avery Brodde, while Colton Jewell dished out 15 assists.

Mundelein d. Antioch: Sam Nelson and Luke Ramer had 5 and 4 kills, respectively, as the Mustangs won the North Suburban opener 25-9, 25-21.

Mundelein (5-3) also got 3 kills apiece from Jesus Guzman (2 blocks) and Danny Lake, while David Everding served 2 aces and set 38 of 40 with 17 assists.

Antioch was led by Troy Mayer (5 kills, 4 blocks) and Andrew Gagnon (12 digs).

Zion-Benton d. Grant: The Bulldogs lost 25-17, 25-19, despite 7 kills from Brock Lundman. Corey SaLee dished out 13 assists and delivered 2 aces for Grant.

Warren d. Lake Forest: Jeremy White served 4 aces and totaled 2 blocks for the Blue Devils, who prevailed 25-15, 24-26, 26-24 in the North Suburban opener.

Warren (1-1) received 5 kills from Mitch Maan de Kok and four apiece from Bryant Holland and Zach Schultz. Max Bongratz posted 3 blocks, and Arvind Kouta had 21 assists.
