St. Charles man dies after apparent heart attack on I-90 near Gilberts

A 66-year-old St. Charles man died Saturday morning after apparently suffering a heart attack that caused him to crash his vehicle into a pickup truck parked in a construction zone on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway near Gilberts, an Illinois state police spokesman said.

Police received reports at 9:37 a.m. of a vehicle weaving out of control on the tollway before hitting the parked pickup near Tyrrell Road.

Two bystanders stopped their cars and began administering CPR to the driver, Guy Cooper, Master Sgt. Ed Petrik said.

Then a state trooper arrived at the crash and assisted with the CPR, Petrik said.

Cooper was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin where he was pronounced dead at 10:25 a.m., the spokesman said.

Illinois state police continue to investigate the crash.

An autopsy is pending with the Kane County Coroner.
