Bicyclist hit by car in Crystal Lake

A bicyclist struck by a car Wednesday evening in Crystal Lake was flown to a nearby hospital from the scene.

The crash happened at about 6 p.m. at the intersection of Ackman Road and Westport Ridge on the city's southwest side.

Police say a 2006 Lexus driven by Emily Schlimm, 20, of Lakewood, was heading east on Ackman Road when it struck a 17-year-old girl who was bicycling south on Westport Ridge. The bicyclist rode through the intersection and into the path of the vehicle, which had the right of way, police said.

The car struck and drove over the bicycle, while the rider was thrown to the ground, police said. A Flight-for-Life helicopter took the bicyclist, who did not have life-threatening injuries, to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Traffic was diverted from the area for more than 2½ hours while police investigated.
