West Chicago home heavily damaged by fire

West Chicago firefighters responded to a fire in a single family home Thursday afternoon that started in the basement and quickly spread into the first floor and attic, authorities said.

Crews from the West Chicago Fire Protection District were sent to the home on the 900 block of Gates Street at 5:08 p.m. for the report of a structure fire, according to a news release.

Firefighters arrived two minutes later and found heavy smoke coming from the basement and first floor in the rear of the house, the release stated.

The fire later extended into the attic area above the second floor, but was brought under control in an hour, officials said.

All residents had evacuated the house by the time firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported.

Fire department officials did not have a preliminary cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.

The house sustained significant heat and smoke damage, though a preliminary damage estimate was not available.
